Designed to Conquer Space: BR-X1 HyperStellar

Bell & Ross has introduced a space-themed version of its BR-X1 hypersonic chronograph earlier this year, the BR-X1 HyperStellar. Mechanical chronographs have always been part of the official kit of astronauts and cosmonauts. These watches have enabled missions to be completed in situations where electronic motor systems have malfunctioned.
To survive in space, a watch has to respond to certain specifications: resistance to extreme temperatures, corrosion, impacts, acceleration, pressure, vibration and more. This is not easy to achieve.



Bell & Ross has designed the BR-X1 HyperStellar as a horological space capsule and made sure that the watch is suitable for use with gloves. The predominance of stone grey and electric blue is a reference to two colours closely associated with space exploration: the grey of the moon and the blue of the Earth.
The BR-X1 HyperStellar chronograph features a 60-second counter in the centre, the minute timer on the chronograph function is positioned at 9 o’clock and instead of a hand it features an ultra light aluminium disk resembling the blades of a turbine.
On the flange appears a tachymetre scale in blue.
Made from grey-tinted sapphire crystal and featuring appliqué metal indices filled with Super-LumiNova, the dial forms a clear window through which the movement can be admired.



Through the usage of titanium and aluminium for the case the BR-X1 HyperStellar is a very light watch. These two materials are widely used in the aerospace industry. Aluminium is known to generate an impermeable oxide lawyer, which protects it against corrosion. And titanium has exceptional corrosion resistance properties, high biocompatibility and properties that enable the production of small, thin parts that are light yet strong.
The case measures 45 mm in diameter, the bezel’s protective insert is in blue anodised aluminium. To protect it from impacts, the square case of the BR-X1 HyperStellar is covered with a bumper in the rubber that acts as a peripheral protective shell. A rubber grip function has also been integrated to ensure better handling even when wearing gloves.
The case is water resistant up to 100 metres and combines polished and brushed surfaces.

The Bell & Ross BR-X1 HyperStellar is powered by the calibre BR-CAL.313, a skeletonized, mechanical automatic movement. It can be seen through a small circular opening in the caseback.
This watch comes with a grey alligator and rubber strap and is limited to 200 pieces.

Sturmanskie Strela 3133/1361617

Ao contrário da Vostok-Europe de que já falei anteriormente e que na realidade é uma empresa lituana, a Sturmanskie é uma verdadeira marca russa cuja história remonta a 1949 e cujo pináculo da fama surgiu em 1961, quando Iuri Gagarin, o primeiro astronauta do mundo, usou um Sturmanskie durante a sua viagem à volta da Terra.
A marca foi entretanto esquecida até ser recuperada pela Volmax, uma empresa com sede em Moscovo e que ressuscitou em 2002 não apenas a Sturmanskie como também a Aviator, outra famosa marca russa.
O relógio que escolhi hoje é o modelo Strela, um cronógrafo mecânico baseado no modelo do mesmo nome lançado originalmente pela Sturmanskie em 1959. A execução inclui uma caixa em aço com um diâmetro de 42mm, vidro de safira, resistência à água de 3 atmosferas e bracelete de pele. O movimento mecânico de corda manual tem a referência 3133 e é de fabrico russo.
Além da complicação de cronógrafo, o Strela inclui também indicação da data às 6 horas e o mostrador integra uma escala taquimétrica em vermelho, contrastante com o resto das marcações a preto sobre um mostrador champanhe.
A Sturmanskie tem representação em Portugal através da SRI, que indica um preço de referência de 674 euros para este modelo.

Fernando Correia de Oliveira explica que o descarregamento das edições mensais online é gratuita (na web ou via app) e que esta desmaterialização do suporte traz consigo outras vantagens: "a partir de agora, o nosso mundo passa a ser a Língua Portuguesa visando, além do mercado nacional, os mercados emergentes do Brasil e de Angola." Além disso, "as versões digitais têm a vantagem de dar aos investidores [anunciantes] a possibilidade de colocação de filmes, links e outros conteúdos nos espaços que contratam."
O resultado? "Estamos a ter uma aceitação excelente por parte dos operadores do mercado, que em tempos de crise aderem a novas soluções."

Este movimento pode ser observado através do fundo da caixa em vidro e inclui um calendário lunar às 6h00, mostrador de pequenos segundos às 9h00 e data às 3h00.

A execução é muito bonita e cuidada, com uma caixa em aço de 42mm e mostrador com vidro de safira. O relógio encontra-se disponível em Portugal para pré-encomenda, com entrega no final de Março de 2016, através da rede de lojas do seu distribuidor local, a SRI. O preço é de €799 – não é barato, mas dado que esta é uma série limitada com os últimos movimentos disponíveis deste tipo, trata-se de uma peça de coleção cuja valorização é praticamente garantida.

Seiko hat sich für eine automatische Bewegung 4R35 entschieden . Dies entspricht dem bereits bekannten unserem NH35A; Seiko verwendet die Bezeichnung 4R35, wenn es in seinen eigenen Uhren verwendet wird; NH35A ist die Bezeichnung, wenn es in Uhren anderer Hersteller integriert wird .

Die Anzeige setzt das Design fort, das auch von Seiko in anderen Taucheruhren verwendet wurde, mit dicken (und lumineszierenden) Indizes und klassischen Zeigern, wobei der stundenförmige Pfeil ausgeprägt ist. Das Glas des Zifferblattes ist mineralisch, Hardlex- Typ , ähnlich in Bezug auf die Widerstandsfähigkeit gegen die Risiken für die K1.

Das Ergebnis ist eine ausbalancierte Taucheruhr, die für den täglichen Gebrauch bereitsteht und für manche Benutzer vielleicht ein wenig angsteinflößend ist (für andere kann es sogar die perfekte Form sein).

Der Preis bleibt. Der Referenzwert der Marke beträgt 460 €, was für das, was hier angeboten wird, nicht übertrieben erscheint. Das Beste ist jedoch, dass man es für viel weniger bekommen kann: Ich habe es für 390 € auf Amazon gefunden, mit Porto nach Portugal kostenlos.

How Today's Watches Get Their Glow

Earlier this week, we brought you an historical perspective of the century-long journey to bring luminescence to the watch dial for easy night and underwater reading. As we mentioned at the close of that article: the favored materials used today for watches is Super-LumiNova (developed just about two decades ago in the early 1990s).

Super-LumiNova is non-radioactive and is a strontium aluminate substance created in a host of colors that enable the watch numerals, markers, hands and other dial accents to glow blue, green or even red-orange depending on the mixes used. Over the decades, the material has advanced thanks to a great deal of research and development, and the Super-LumiNova of the early 1990s has evolved into a new intensity that is at least double the strength of the early versions. Super-LumiNova can be as much as 10 times brighter than the previous zinc sulfide-based materials, and is applied in varying strengths.



After absorbing sufficient UV light, the phosphorescence glows in the dark for hours. The pigments, though, must be protected against contact with water or moisture, and so they are generally used only on dials (since they are protected by the crystal) and not on bezels. Super-LumiNova is the current market leader for luminous watch dials.

However, there are other materials on the market that some of the professional sports watch brands are using for dive and pilot watches. Top among them is a tritium-based device called "gaseous tritium light source" (GTLS), wherein the material is encapsulated inside tiny glass tubes. These tiny tubes are then placed together to offer a brightness that can be as much as 10 times brighter than applied Super-LumiNova.



MB-Microtec is a big developer and supplier of the tiny tubes system – offering GTLS radioactive luminescence locked inside hermetically sealed capsules. It should be noted that GTLS is forbidden in certain countries even though it is encapsulated in glass tubes because the material is, after all, radioactive.

Which is better? It may not be that one is better than another, but that, in fact, one may be longer lasting than another. For instance, it has been found that while Super-LumiNova begins to dim after about 20 minutes, a tritium capsule will not dim for about 15 to 20 years. Additionally, while Super-LumiNova needs to be exposed to a light source to regenerate its power, the capsules are permanently luminescent during their lifetime.

NAWCC Hosts 2015 Ward Francillon Time Symposium From Oct. 22-24

With a focus on mechanical music boxes and automatons, the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC.org) hosts the 2015 Ward Francillon Time Symposium later this month.

Slated to take place from October 22-24 in Houston, the symposium focuses on the history and development of clocks and clock-operated devices, including singing bird boxes and whistlers, disc and cylinder music boxes, musical clocks and automatons.



Lecture topics will include the history and development of musical clocks and musical machines, including string-operated phonographs and gramophones. There will also be a focus on Black Forest clocks, with a look at different types of musical Swiss and German boxes. One presenter will offer an extensive slide show on extraordinary rare musical clocks made in America in the 18th and early 19th centuries.

A host of other subjects will be covered throughout the multi-day event, including a panel discussion on what to look for when purchasing a musical mechanism. There will also be tours of two large private collections. Registration is open to the public and no NAWCC membership is required.

Diesel DZ4028 Chronograph

Heute trage ich eine klobige Uhr von der Modemarke Diesel.
Dieses Modell ist eine ihrer Chronographenuhren und heißt DZ4028 (oder DZ-4028 oder DZ 4028, je nachdem, wo es geschrieben wird). Die Uhr hat ein abgerundetes quadratisches Gehäuse mit sehr auffälligen (und sehr massiven) Vorsprüngen von der Ober- und Unterseite des Gehäuses über die Enden des Riemens. Der Riemen ist auch ein klobiges Design, aus dickem schwarzem Leder gefertigt, und es hat eine Diesel-Schnalle.

Die Uhr verfügt über ein 3-Zeiger-Zifferblatt, aber wie bei vielen Chronographenuhren ist der Hauptsekundenzeiger für die Stoppuhr-Funktion und die Sekunden für die Uhrzeit werden auf einem separaten kleinen Zifferblatt angezeigt. Es gibt drei kleine Zifferblätter auf dem Gesicht mit dem unteren, das Sekunden bedeckt, und den anderen zwei (links und oben), die Minuten und Stunden für den Chronographen bedecken. Es gibt auch ein Datumsfenster in der 3-Uhr-Position. Das Gesicht Design ist sehr deutlich als Diesel mit der Kombination von Schwarz und Farbtupfern, und die Verwendung von verschiedenen Arten von Markierungen um die Zifferblätter.

Die Rückseite bedeckt die üblichen Informationen (fester Edelstahl, 10 bar / 330 ft wasserdicht) und hat die Modellnummer. Es gibt auch den Diesel-Namen und den Mann mit Mohawk-Logo für die Only The Brave-Muttergesellschaft, aber ohne den üblichen Only The Brave-Text.

Für Datum habe ich nicht gefunden diese Uhr an vielen Stellen für Verkauf zum Verkauf, der vorschlägt, dass es nicht ein aktuelles Modell ist. Auf der Grundlage des Designs würde ich daher annehmen, dass es Ende 2000 oder Anfang 2010 ist.

Sturm Salvador

Zeit für meinen ersten Beitrag von 2017!
Die heutige Uhr würde ich eine andere aus meiner Auswahl von Uhren aus der Londoner Marke Storm, und diesmal ist es eine ihrer limitierten Uhren.

Dieses Modell heißt Salvador und ist eine Quarz-Analoguhr mit einem quadratischen Gehäuse. Die Vorderseite ist an den Kanten mit Glas bedeckt, mit Ausnahme der rechten Seite, wo ein schräger Metallstreifen ist. Das Display hat ein Haupt-3-Hand-Zifferblatt mit drei kleineren Zifferblättern. Die kleinen Zifferblätter decken das Datum oben, den Tag auf der linken Seite und das 24-Stunden-Zifferblatt auf der Unterseite ab. Manchmal habe ich gesehen, dass dies als Dualzeit angegeben wurde, aber ich denke, das ist, wo sie über das 24-Stunden-Wahlrad verwirrt sind.

Ich weiß nicht, wann die Uhr veröffentlicht wurde (ich schätze die 2000er aus dem Design), aber es gab nur 3000 dieses schwarzen Modells, das weltweit veröffentlicht wurde. Die Uhr war auch in weiß und blau erhältlich, und ich denke, diese hatten auch eine begrenzte Anzahl.

Die Uhr hat ein Edelstahlgehäuse und Armband und ist 50m wasserdicht. Das Armband hat einen Glaseinsatz in einem der Glieder, hinter dem sich der Storm-Name befindet. Es gibt keine Erwähnung der Modellnummer auf der Uhr, aber eine der Verkaufsstellen schlug vor, dass das Modell 4094 / BR ist (mit dem BR denke ich in Bezug auf die Farbe).
